Inspiration, creative practice
“We live only to discover beauty.” (Khalil Gibran)
My objective is to take a single moment in time but focus solely on the surface beauty of that moment: beauty is important. I like to paint the quiet, still moments of beauty that exist amidst the turmoil of reality.
I am enormously inspired by colour and pattern. The play between these elements never ceases to fascinate me. It was during the years I lived in Prague and saw firsthand the art from the turn of the century middle Europe – art nouveau, the Czech secese and Austrian secession artists, in particular Mucha, Klimt and Schiele that inspired me greatly. Added to this are the beautiful patterns and colours of Byzantine and Persian art.
It was during this time that I turned from Textiles to painting, but still drawing on the same influences.
