About us

Inka was set up on a shoe-string budget in 1999 by four local artists who were students and graduates of the University of Tasmania Art School.

Housed in a small space in the Hobart’s Salamanca alcoves, its aim was to promote contemporary work by emerging local artists. The works were at first to be drawings—ink art—from where came the name (with the help of a glass of wine or two)… Inka!

The unique logo was designed in 2003 by Inkan Kath Workman. It was described in an Inka newsletter at the time as having an almost Incan feel to it and it was “a very appropriate design of two embracing figures that portray the message of co-operation”.

With the exception of one small arts grant, the gallery has been funded by its membership (which soon built up to number more than 20 and is currently 17).

Work in various mediums has been exhibited over the 10 years and has ranged through the quirky, political, figurative, abstract, impressionist, whimsical, illustrative, surreal, realistic, digital, photographic, calligraphic, innovative, conservative and the provocative.

Inka is well-supported by local, interstate and international customers.
